Intimate Celebration
Ishita and Rohan wanted the opposite of a big fat wedding. They chose Majuli — the world's largest river island — and invited only the 40 people who mattered most, hosting the entire celebration inside a traditional Mishing bamboo cottage on the riverbank.
A satra courtyard doubled as the ceremony space, with the Brahmaputra visible from every seat. Guests stayed together in a cluster of homestays, turning the three-day trip into something closer to a retreat than a wedding.
"We didn't lose anything by keeping it small. If anything, we finally got to actually spend time with everyone who came."
Décor stayed deliberately minimal — bamboo, white marigold, and handwoven Assamese gamosa used as table runners. No stage, no elaborate mandap; just a raised platform under a canopy of hanging jute lanterns.
The couple wrote their own vows and exchanged them at golden hour with the river as a backdrop, followed by a community feast cooked by the island's residents in traditional bamboo utensils.
